More Than Your Average Coffee Shop

Coffee can seem to make the world go around; right here in North East is no exception. Helping our little world of North East turn smoother is The Bean Coffee House. Since opening in 2016, The Bean has become more than just a coffee shop and instead a staple of the local community.

Outside of original coffee blends and beans, The Bean has expanded to sell other drinks and treats. Most recently added are the Lotus Refreshers. These colorful sips offer a necessary amount of caffeine with plant based background “The Lotus Refreshers have about 80 to 90 milligrams of caffeine and they are a plant based energy; they are the green coffee bean and green tea extract, but not the 200 milligrams of caffeine offered in other energy drinks,” Manager Angela Johnson shared. In addition, one of the most popular drinks isn’t even a branch of coffee; it’s their Chai. “…it’a a lot sweeter and creamier than you get at a lot of other places, so I think that’s a big draw for people that isn’t coffee,” Johnson said.

Customers can also support this local business through the purchase of Grape City Apparel merchandise sold in the shop. The owner, Tamara Walters, designs each piece of merch herself. “She’ll get inspiration from places she travels…I think Grape City kind of was a play on Windy City. She [Tamara] has always been really selective with her apparel. She tries to pick sweatshirts that she really likes the quality of,” Johnson said.

New and very exciting this year is The Bean Coffee House pop-up stand at UPMC Park. Visit The Bean during every home SeaWolves game to purchase a specialty sixteen-ounce canned coffee in three flavors (caramel chai, mocha, and cold brew).  “She’s got a whole little crew to go out to the games and just expand our presence and hopefully reach more people in the Erie area. It’s like the next big step, I think, and it’s quite an honor to be included,” Johnson said.
