Small Business Saturday & Light Up North East

Saturday, Nov. 28, is this year’s day for small businesses to shine — it’s the first Saturday after Thanksgiving and one of the busiest shopping days of the year.

It’s a day created specifically for small businesses. American Express founded Small Business Saturday® in 2010 as a way to encourage people to shop local around the country. Shopping small means choosing to cross off your Christmas list at small businesses throughout North East; exploring what our local businesses have to offer, and finding that unique gift for someone you love.

Please remember to practice proper social distancing and respect the rules at each business. Don’t forget that many businesses require masks and some have limits to the number of customers that can be in the building at one time.

As a small business, when you register to participate in Small Business Saturday®, you gain access to marketing materials, printable posters, templates for social media posts, and more. It is free to participate. Sign up your business for at

The Chamber has registered as a Small Business Saturday Neighborhood Champion and has once again booked a full page ad in the North East News Journal to promote the event and let everyone in the community know when our businesses are open. To be included in the ad, email your hours of operation for Small Business Saturday® to The ad will appear on November the two Thursdays leading up to the event and is open to all North East businesses.

North East’s annual celebration of lighting up downtown, singing carols and welcoming Santa Claus takes place Saturday, November 28th.  Beginning at 5:00 pm, gather in Gibson Park to sing Christmas carols and await Santa and Mrs. Claus’s arrival by fire truck in the Light Up NE Parade. Then, at 6:00 we will flip the switch and light up all the decorations, officially kicking off the holiday season in North East.

Please remember to practice proper social distancing and be respectful to others gathered in the park for this event. Stay in small groups with your own families and avoid crowding together when observing the parade.
